What does the acronym SBAR stand for and what is it used for?
Used to remind nurses of all the things that they need to mention in handover.
S - Situation (e.g. I am called about X)
B - Background (e.g. patient X has a history of …, was admitted with…)
A - Assessment (e.g. I think the problem is… I have given…)
R - Recommendation (e.g. I need you to come and see in x mins, is there anything I should monitor in the meantime?)
What is Otitis Media?
Inflammation of the middle ear.
What is epistaxis?
Medical term for a nosebleed.
What is Otitis Externa?
Inflammation of the external ear canal.
What is a mastoidectomy?
A surgical procedure to remove the infected portion of the mastoid bone.
What is the general name of a surgical procedure to repair damage to the eardrum?
Tympanoplasty.
What is a Stapedotomy?
A surgical procedure to replace part of or all of the the stapes bone with an artificial device. This restores sound transmission to the inner ear.
What is the general name of a surgical procedure to remove lymph nodes in the neck and surrounding tissue to prevent spread of cancer?
Neck dissection.
What is a glossectomy?
The surgical removal of all or part of the tongue.
What is a laryngectomy?
The surgical removal of all or part of the the larynx. This is typically for advanced stage laryngeal cancer or chronic aspiration.
What is a tracheostomy?
The surgical creation of an opening in the neck, leading to the trachea. This is maintained open with a tube.
What is the general name for the surgical correction of a deviated septum, causing nasal obstruction or chronic sinusitis?
Septoplasty.
What information should a prescription chart in an acute hospital contain?
1) Identify the patient.
2) Record allergies and reaction details.
3) Record the patient’s weight.
4) Clearly specify the substance to be administered.
5) Be signed.
