You have come across a person lying on the floor, what is the first thing you should do?
Check for danger.
When should you call for help?
As soon as you find that a patient is unresponsive.
When checking a patient’s airway, why do we perform a head tilt chin lift?
To open and maintain a patent airway.
How long should we look, listen and feel for signs of breathing?
10 seconds.
Note that noisy, infrequent or gasping breaths are not normal breathing.
What should you do if there are no signs of life from your airway and breathing assessment?
Call for help again, reporting a cardiac arrest, commence CPR.
What is the procedure for adult CPR?
30 chest compressions, 2 rescue breaths, repeat. As soon as an AED arrives, switch it on and follow instructions.
What is the procedure for child or infant CPR?
5 rescue breaths, then cycle 30 chest compressions and 2 rescue breaths.
If in a hospital, cycle 15 chest compressions and two rescue breaths.
What is the recommended depth and rate of adult chest compressions?
5-6cm, 100-120 per minute.
What should you do if you suspect that an adult or child is choking?
- Encourage the person to cough.
- If ineffective, give 5 back blows.
- If ineffective give 5 abdominal thrusts.
- Continue alternating steps 2 and 3 until it is relieved or adult becomes unresponsive.
- If adult is unresponsive, perform CPR.
What is the recommended depth and rate of child and infant chest compressions?
4-5cm, 100-120 compressions per minute.
What number should you ring in the event of an in-hospital cardiac arrest?
2222.
What should you do if you suspect that an infant is choking?
- Support in a head-downwards position.
- Deliver up to 5 back blows.
- If ineffective, deliver 5 chest thrusts.
