key study: mori and arai (2010) Flashcards
participants
104 japanese students were separated into groups of four and given specially designed filter glasses
method
three of four glasses filtered green light and the other filtered out red, the participants were shown a set of lines and the top part of the stimulus line was printed in different colours so different glasses saw different lengths. this meant the majority actually saw the line as a different length than the minority so no acting was required. the participants stated their answers aloud the the minority going third
findings
the 26 minority participants answered incorrectly 20% if the time, female minority participants answered incorrectly 30% of the time while males were only 5%
conclusions
conformity is less likely in 2010 than it was in the 1950’s and there is a significant difference in the likelihood of conforming between men and women as females are five times more likely to conform, the unanimity of the majority made little difference to the likelihood of conformity
evaluation
effective way for measuring conformity without confederates so is ethical and works better for children, included women as well compared to asch so represents the population, women conforming more may be due to cultural reasons, not generalisable due to cultural factors
