- Bowles/Gintis focus on the influence of the hidden curriculum in socialising pupils into conformist/obedient
- however, many point out that particularly in the UK many subjects, sociology, history, politics encourage critical thinking of society

- Paul Willis, found working class students do not simply passively accept their place in society in obedient manner, shows little respect for school rules/teachers authority
- goes against Bowles/Gintis idea that schools create a docile workforce who are submissive

- Bowles/Gintis imply education system is largely controlled by the ruling capitalist class/respond to their needs
- However, UK education system controlled by the LEA representing local councils voting by the people = very democratic
