Key structures Flashcards
CNS
Brain and spinal cord
PNS
Somatic nervous system (skin, joints, muscles) and autonomic nervous system (internal organs, blood vessels, glands)
Forebrain
Cerebral hemispheres, thalamus, hypothalamus
Hindbrain
Pons, cerebellum, medulla
Saggital section
cuts through the midline. Imagine a vertical cut through the nose.
Coronal section
allows us to see anterior and posterior halves of the brain.
Horizontal section
cut horizontally through the eyes to see superior and inferior halves.
Midbrain
Associated with eye and motor function
Ventricular system
Cavity of cerebrospinal fluid
Provides physical protection
Maintains appropriate ion levels
Removes waste products
Divisions of the spinal cord
Cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral
Grey matter
Exterior of brain, interior of spinal cord
Made up of cell bodies of neurons and glia
White matter
Interior of brain and exterior of spinal cord
neuronal axons wrapped in myelin
