key question Flashcards
clinical key question
what are the issues surrounding mental health in the work place?
paragraph 1 (4D's) PAES example and evaluation
P: 480,000 in UK reporting mental health issues due to work. don’t speak up, scared of unemployment. Patients with schizo who were on medication vastly unemployed
A: Faris (1934) - schizo withdraw because contact is stressful
E: problem in the work place because most jobs require contact but if it is a triggering environment for people then won’t get job done
S: supporting evidence from 4Ds dysfunction as you cannot maintain job therefore suggesting why many are unemployed and distress as it impairs ability to carry out tasks
EG: teachers distress will affect children
EV: 4D’s subjective so misdiagnoses
paragraph 2 (discrimination and labelling) PEAS example and evaluation
P: 1/4 people with MH have experiences discrimination at work. 1/10 often leave jobs because they feel discriminated against
E: prejudice comes from stigmatisation derived from the way mental illnesses are described or diagnosed. e.g. danger is one of the 4D’s used to asses mental health
A: Faze et al (2009) people with schizophrenia are not any more dangerous than people without but because of labelling e.g. dangerous
S: Supporting evidence from Rosenhan 1973 p-ps labelled insane even though they exhibited normal behaviour
EG: in a workplace people with history of mental health may be subject to labelling despite no longer showing symptoms. This could result in SFP where label triggers behavioural response
EV: supporting evidence from Rosenhan as 7/8 diagnosed schizophrenia
paragraph 3 (cognitive processing) PS evaluation
P: difficulties cognitive processing makes it hard to keep up with complexities of work place tasks. CBT reestablishes normal thinking therefore if people suffering MHD’s are not undergoing CBT then cognitive tasks to carry out work tasks may make it hard to function appropriately in the workplace
EV: however, CBT vs. other non0bio treatment CBT was only superior 2/9 times
S: supporting evidence from Howes and Kapur 2009 = cognitive impairment is caused by dopamine dysregulation in the stratium which causes cognitive disassociation and hallucinations. This is a biological angle and therefore biological treatment is better
conclusion
- it is evident times have progressed and there is more awareness about mental health in the workplace
- however, people are still afraid of speaking out due to being labelled and discriminated against = big issue
- Clinical psychology has helped to some extent identify problems through Rosenhan and labelling
- Clinical psychology can highlight the negative opinions of others towards those suffering with MH
