describe the issue of our social key question (ao1)

A
  • Football hooliganism relates to crowd behaviour that is negative and can cause violence.
  • The rivalry between fans can be seen before/after matches outside stadiums as supporters wear their team’s colours making themselves identifiable.
  • Psychology can be used to explain why this happens and overcome it.

Q

Use psychological knowledge to explain why football violence is happening & how it can be overcome (ao2)

A

Football supporters are members of a group for more solid reasons than members in tajfel’s study. Fans categorise themselves into a football supporter group and identify with them by wearing team colours/shirts/flags. The ingroup will be prejudiced toward the ougroup by singing chants, insulting them, and showing verbal/non-verbal negative gestures towards the other group. Discrimination and prejudice can occur.

Social identity theory can be used to overcome prejudice by working towards a common goal like a charity match/event

Q

social key question - ao3 strength

A

P - A strength is that there is supporting evidence behind the theory.

E - Tajfel’s minimal group’s study found that boys would rather maximise the difference in points in favour of their group (7:1) rather than maximise joint profits (19:25).

T - Therefore explaining and reducing football hooliganism is based on valid theories.

Q

social key question - ao3 weakness

A

P: However, a weakness of using social psychology to decrease football related violence is that the theories ignore the role of personality

E: For example, Cohrs et al found that RWA is positively correlated with generalise prejudice.

T: This theory suggests that everyone is influenced by situational factors, therefore ignoring individual differences that can affect prejudice and discrimination
