key question Flashcards
what is the biological key question
what are the implications for society if aggression is found to be caused by nature and not nurture
what is the AO1
- biological cause
- environmental cause
- if caused by environmental factors someone can chose not to behave in that way
- if caused by biology, not an element of choice, we cannot help our biology
- people have to learn control so they can be blamed for npt being in control rather than the innate aggression
-if we should not be blammed if aggression comes from nature then using improsonment to prevent aggression may not be ethical - whether someone should be punished for something they cannot help doing
- anxiety and depression get attention from society and are treated whereas anger and aggression are punished yet all linked to emotion
- unfair if one sort of emotion is treated and brings sympathy from society but another emotion leads to blame
how does they brain link to the key question
prefrontal cortex
low activity can lead to reduced self control and more impulsive behaviours
the amygdala
more activity higher aggression
evaluate the brain in terms of the key question
+ downer monkeys
- animal research
is the brain nature or nurture and if linked to aggression how to fix
nature
scan brains early in life
how do hormones link to the key question
testosterone
down regulates serotonin increasing aggression
cortisol
low levels mean ANS is under aroused, aggression an attemp to increase cortisol
evaluate hormones in terms of the key question
+ dabbs, testosterone in male prisoners
- reductionist
if hormones linked to aggression how to reduce
inject oestrogen
how do genes relate to the key question
MAOA gene
less serotonin
x linked so men more at risk
evaluate genes in terms of key question
+ brunner et al missing MAOA gene in make family memebers showing more aggression
- not all with low functioning MAOA gene are aggressive
if genes linked to aggression how to reduce
gen splicing
how does evolution link to the key question
females chose males who provide good genes so big strong men favoured, those who display aggressive traits more successfull, aggressive genes survived
evaluate evolution in terms of the key question
+ scientific theory, Dawin
- dawin only focus on genetic transmission
if evolution said to have impact on aggression how to reduce
gentic modification to prevent innate aggression
