key points for bio paper 1 Flashcards
bacteria
- absence of membrane bound organelles such as nuclei or mitochondria
- unicellular
- ribosomes are 70S (smaller)
- cell wall made of murien
- single loop of naked DNA
Eukarya
- membrane bound organelles
- larger ribosomes (80S)
(is divided into 4 kingdoms: protoctist, animal, plants and fungi)
species diversity
the number of different species and the number of individuals of each species in any one community
genetic diversity
variety of genes possessed by individuals that make up a population of a species
ecosystem diversity
refers to the range of different habitats
species richness
a measure of species diversity that is the number of different species in a particular area at a given time.
This is an important measure because two communities might have the same number of species but the proportions of the community made up of each species may differ.
how to read the species diversity index
the higher the value of d, the greater the species diversity
species diversity management techniques for farmers
- maintaining existing hedgerows
- planting hedges instead of putting up fences
- leave wet corners of the field
- biological control instead of pesticides
- crop rotation that includes a nitrogen fixing crop instead of using fertilisers
polygenic
coded for by one gene
