immunology Flashcards
1
Q
what is an antigen
A
any substance thats recognised as non-self
2
Q
key features of a specific response
A
- slow
- specific
- memory
3
Q
3 jobs of a T cell
A
- trigger phagocytosis by releasing cytokines
- trigger B cells by releasing cytokines
- cytotoxic T cells can kill cells
4
Q
cell mediated immunity
A
the immune response to your own cells that are presenting antigens that are non self.
5
Q
what sort of cells are T cells responding to
A
phagocytes that have become APC
cancer cells
cells that are infected with viruses
transplant
6
Q
what is the cell mediated response
A
- clonal selection in the Thymus
- T cell binds to the antigen that on the MHC.
- T cell duplicates (clonal expansion)
- T helper cells will release cytokines
the cytokines either trigger cytotoxic tcells, phagocytes or B cells.
7
Q
B cells
A
B cells can act as antigen presenting cells although rare.
presents that antigen to the T cell
t helper cell clonal expansion
release lots of cytokines
B cell divides and either becomes plasma cells or memory cells
