A
Born: c. (1501-1536)
Became one of the queens maid when she was 13 and one of King Henry VIII mistresses
Arguably one of the causes for his divorce of Catherine of Aragon and the break with Rome.
Described as feisty and uncompromising

Cardinal Campeggio
1474-1539
A
- Sent 2 england by the order of the pope to stall the process of Henrys annulment court case
- When Catherine fought back by appealing to Rome Cammpagio tried the case in the legantine court.
- He could only stall for so long as the formal proceedings started on the 31st May 1526 in the court of Blackfriars
- He had gout

Cardinal Wosley (1475-1530)
A
- He was not born of noble family
- Had academic ability & graduated Oxford at 15 with a degree of Bachelor of Arts
- in 1507 he became the chamberlain to Henry VII & rose in ranks
- Held immense power and wealth due to his plethora of roles, he was often referenced as the alter rex
- He took care of affairs when the king was not there or not wanting to
- he held roles like: cardinal, minister of the star chamber, arcbishop if York, legatus a latere. Also had a close relationship with the king

- He was a reman monk, author, professor, priest
- Promote the translation of the bible so commoners & challenged the practice of transubstantiation
- Nailed his requests to the cathedral Wittenberg on 31st October 1517
- He was a Lutheran who was not locked as there was a public burning of his books in 1520
- Inspired William Tyndall and Simmons fish = Who believed in the importance of faith

Polydore Vergil (1470-1555)

- Ambassador to the Vatican
- Invited by Henry in 1502
- Was sent to prison by Cardinal Wolsey for his comments. Was releases in 1515 but hated Wosley. This was reflected is his accounts of him later.
- His accounts are heavy in bias.

Reginald Pole (1500-1558)
A
- English Cardinal of the Catholic Church who served as the last Archbishop of Canterbury
- He had a string claim to the throne
- Renaissance Humanist thinker. Henry attempted to bribe him to support his annulment. But he declined but he declined as a firm believer on the church. So the king had him assassinated.

- King Henrys 1st wife - previously married to his brother
- Had many supporters abroad and in England ( when her and her husband people cheered for her NOT henry )
- She made a very appealing case in the court
- Thomas more & John Fisher supported her

- Had regular meetings with with Cardinal Wosley
- On many accounts can be found complimenting henry and the cardinal

- Believed the power of the church was illegitimate because they had grown wealthy by perpetuating the idea of purgatory.

- Translated the bible
- was sill a devout Catholic but was critical of the church practices and the corruption
- Inspired many Lutherans
