Who started Lollard, what and where was it?
John Wycliffe - in the 14th century in Oxford, England
Who was John Wycliffe? ( How was he regarded in life and death)
Theologian who was supported and respected while he was alive BUT after his death he was put on trial and his body burnt as a heretic.
What is the significance of the name ‘Lollard’
The name was an insult as it insinuated stupidity.
The people that followed him were called Lollard’s
What were the key practices of Lollardy (3)
- Praying directly to God
- Confessing to God
- Reading the bible in vernacular ( in their own language)
What were the main beliefs of Lollard’s (2)
- Priests are not needed for salvation.
- Question the practice of transubstantiation
What is their key idea?
The individual is responsible for their relationship with God.
Who was Luther?
He was a German monk and theologist
What was Luthers life like?
He lived a strict life, although he had a wife whilst being a priest.
He was afraid he would not go to heaven after he died.
He used crude language
