Key Haven Marsh Flashcards
What protects key haven marsh?
Hurst castle spit
Why is the keyhaven salt marsh at risk? (3)
Due to rising sea levels the marsh is retreating by up to 6m a year.
Visitors due to tourism put pressure on the area (footpath erosion, pollution from boats).
During storms the spit can be breached leaving the March to sea erosion.
What is being done to protect keyhaven marsh? (2)
£5 million of sea defences have been put in place (rock armour, beach replenishment to increase spit size, ect).
Signs put up for visitors to keep to the paths and take litter home.
What is a salt marsh?
An area of low lying coastal wet lands formed from a build-up of mud and silt in a sheltered area e.g behind a spit, which then becomes colonised by salt tolerant plants.
