What is the problem at barton-on-sea?
Lies on South Coast so receives high energy, destructive waves, causing cliff foot erosion by hydraulic action, abrasion, and corrosion.
This meant that the coastline suffered from slumping.
How does this effect Barton-on-sea? (2)
It is built upon tourism and many of the buildings have been destroyed by erosion of the cliffs.
Buildings in the Barton court area will be lost in the next 10-20 years
How much money has recently been spent on improving sea defences?
£4.5 million
What sea defences have been used? (3)
Revetments.
Groynes.
Gabions.
Drainage pipes.
What’s been the problem with some of the defences?
Groynes - led to beach starvation further down the coast.
Revetments - aren’t attractive to tourists.
Drainage pipes - weren’t strong enough to withstand a storm and so were destroyed.
How much erosion each year?
2cm
