Seperate but Equal
A doctrine from the Plessy vs Ferguson (1896) case, justifying racial segregation by claiming facilities for Black and White people could be seperate as long as they were equal
Segregation
The enforced seperation of people based on race, often seen in schools, transportation and public spaces
National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People
A civil rights organisation founded in 1909 to fight racial discrimination
Jim Crow Laws
State and local laws in the U.S. South (late 1800’s - 1960’s) that enforced segregation and denied Black Americans equal rights
Voter Registration
The process of enrolling to vote, in the past, Black Americans faced discriminatory barries like literacy tests
Amnesty International
A global organisation founded in 1961 that helps human rights, focusing on prisoners of conscience and opposing torture due to death penalty
Prisoners of Conscience
People imprisoned for their beliefs, race, or political views, without using violence
Arguments For/Against Death Penalty
For: Deterrent for serious crimes, provides justice for victims
Against: Risk of wrongful executions, violates human rights, and studies show it doesn’t effectively clear crime
