A 32-year-old female presents to her antenatal appointment. She informs the midwife that this is her fourth pregnancy and she is approaching her 31st week of gestation. Her first pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage at 12 weeks’ gestation. Following this, she successfully delivered healthy twins in her second pregnancy. However, during her third pregnancy, she sadly delivered a stillbirth due to placental abruption at 26 weeks’ gestation.
What is her current gravidity and parity?
A. G3, P3+1
B. G4, P3+1
C. G3, P3
D. G4, P2+1
E. G4, P2
D. G4, P2 +1
Gravida is the number of times a woman has been pregnant (current and previous), no matter the outcome. Since this is her fourth pregnancy, G4 is correct.
Parity is the number of times a woman has delivered a potentially viable baby (ie. after 24 weeks or weighing above 500 g) including stillbirth, neonatal death or intrauterine death (twins count as one) plus the number of times a woman has delivered a potentially non-viable baby (ie. less than 24 weeks or weighing below 500 g) including miscarriage, molar or ectopic pregnancy.
P2+1 is correct, as she delivered a twin and a stillbirth at 26 weeks’ pregnancy plus one miscarriage at 12 weeks’ pregnancy.
