Key definitions Flashcards
Define relative atomic mass
The average mass of an atom of an element relative to 1/12th the mass off an atom of carbon-12 which has a mass of 12
Define relative isotopic mass
The mass of an individual atom of a particular isotope compared to 1/12th the mass of an atom of carbon-12 which has a mass of 12
What is an orbital?
A region of space surrounding the nucleus of an atom where there is a high probability of finding an electron . It can hold up to 2 electrons with opposite spins.
What is periodicity?
The trends on properties of elements across a period., trends are repeated in the next period.
Hund’s rule
electrons will occupy orbitals singly before pairing takes place
What is the molecular ion peak?
The peak with the highest m/z ratio in the mass spectrum, the M peak
What is the Pauli Exclusion Principle?
Two electrons cannot occupy the same orbital unless they have opposite spins. Electron spin is shown up upward or downward arrows.
