Key Concepts in Biology Flashcards
Plant Cells v Animal Cells
Plant Cells have a Chloroplast and Animals do not
Animal Cells do not have a permanent Vacuole and Cell Wall
Plant: Cell wall on the outside, cell membrane on the inside
Function of Permanent Vacuole in Plants
Filled with cell sap to help keep the cell turgid.
Function of Mitochondria
Where aerobic respiration occurs, producing the energy needed for the cell to survive and function and contains enzymes for cellular respiration.
Parts of a Bacterial Cell
- Plasmid
- Circular (loop) of DNA
- Cell Wall and Cell Membrane
- Ribosomes
- Cytoplasm
Role of Acrosome
Contains enzymes which helps break down coating of egg, allowing sperm to penetrate egg
Difference between Diploid and Haploid
Haploid: Single Set of 23 Chromosomes within a Gamete
Diploid: Two Sets of 23 chromosomes (46) when two gametes combine
Role of Ciliated Epithelial Cells
Move substances in one direction
For example, Ciliated Epithelial Cells help move mucus (that traps unwanted inhaled substances) up towards the throat.
Quantitative Units
a milli (10^−3)
b micro (10^−6)
c nano (10^−9)
d pico (10^−12)
