Schaffers stages of attachment

A
  1. asocial stage (first few weeks) - the baby shows similar behaviour towards people and objects
  2. indiscriminate attachment (2-7 months) - shows a clear preference of being with humans, recognises people, accepts comfort from anyone, no separation/stranger anxiety
  3. specific attachment (7 months) - displays signs of attachment, separation/stranger anxiety shown, they have a primary attachment figure (65% of the time it is the mother)
  4. multiple attachments (approx 1 year) - they begin to form secondary attachments (29% of children form secondary attachments within a month of forming a primary attachment)

Bowlbys theory of attachment

A

there is a critical period for developing attachment in humans (2 years). if an attachment has not developed during this period, then the child will suffer from irreversible developmental consequences (reduced intelligence and increased aggression)
