Key concepts Flashcards
Define Velocity
Velocity - rate of change in displacement
Define Displacement
Displacement - shortest straight line between the start and finish
Equation for velocity
Velocity = Displacement / Time
v = d/t
Units: m/s
Define Momentum
Momentum - quantity of motion possesed by a moving object
Give the equation for momentum
Momentum = mass x velocity
p = mv
Units: kgm/s
p = momentum
Define inertia
Inertia - the resistance of a body to change its state of motion, whether at rest or while moving
Define acceleration
Acceleration - the rate of change in velocity
Give the equation for acceleration
Acceleration = (final velocity - initial velocity)/ time taken
a = (fv-iv)/t
Units: m/s/s or m/s^2
a = acceleration
fv = final velocity
iv = initial velocity
t = time
Name five factors that increase acceleration
- Increase force
- Increase friction
- Reduce mass
- Reduce air resistance
- Improve technique
