COM and Stability Flashcards
1
Q
Define Centre of mass
A
COM - the point at which a body is balanced in all directions. The point from which all weight appear to act
- The COM is where the weight of the body tends to be concentrated
- The point at which the body is balanced in all directions
2
Q
Use the Fosbury Flop technique in high jump to explain how COM can be manipulated to improve performance
A
- Uses a J curve to allow greater velocity in the approach
- Plants the outside foot to allow the inside leg to lift, along with the arms at take-off to raise the centre of mass as high as possible
- Fully extends the spine to rotate around the bar moving the COM outside the body and bellow the bar. Only one section of the body has to be above the bar at any point in time
Overall, because the COM passes beneath the bar, the Fosbury Flop requires less force at take-off to clear the same heights as other techniques. When maximum force is generated at take- greater heights are achieved
3
Q
Define stability
A
Stability - the ability of a body to resist motion and remain at rest, and to withstand a force applied and return to it’s original position without damage
