Key Area 5- Transport systems (plants) Flashcards
What substances does the phloem transport?
Sugar
What substances does the xylem transport?
Water and minerals
Is the phloem dead or alive tissue?
Alive
Is the xylem dead or alive tissue?
Dead
What is the direction of transport in the xylem?
Up
What is the direction of transport in the phloem?
Up and down
What are the organs in a plant?
Roots, stem and leaf
How do water and minerals enter a plant?
Through root hair cells
What is the rate of transpiration effected by?
1) Wind speed- higher results in faster
2) Temperature- higher results in faster
3) Surface area- increase surface area results in more
4) Humidity- higher humidity slows it down
What are the 4 stages of transpiration?
1) Water enters roots from the soil by osmosis
2) Water moves up the stem in the xylem
3) Water travels to the leaf in the leaf vein
4) Water evaporates and exits the leaf through the stomata
What are the parts of the plant involved in water transport?
Root hair cell and xylem
What do you use to measure transpiration rate?
Bubble potometer
