Key Area 2- Control and communication Flashcards
What does the nervous system consist of?
Central nervous system (CNS) and other nerves
What is the central nervous system (CNS)?
The brain and spinal cord
What is the function of the cerebrum?
Memory and muscle memory
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Balance and coordination
What is the function of the medulla?
Breathing and heart rate
What do the effectors do?
Cause a response to stimulus detected
What do the receptors do?
Detect stimulus
What are the gaps between neurons called?
Synapses
What is the signal transferred across the synapse with?
Chemicals
What do neurons carry signals by?
Electrical impulses
What is a reflex arc needed for?
To protect the body against injury
What do the reflex arcs do?
They avoid going to the brain to make the response automatic and quicker
What do endocrine glands release?
Hormones into the bloodstream
What are hormones?
Chemical messengers
What does a target tissue have?
Cells with complementary receptor proteins for specific hormones, so only the tissue with be affected by these hormones
What is the role of insulin?
Lowers blood sugar by converting glucose to glycogen
What is the role of glucagon?
Increases blood sugar by converting glycogen into glucose
What is the role of glycogen?
A carbohydrate made of lots of glucose bonded together
What is the role of the liver?
Stores glycogen
What is the role of the pancreas
Produces and releases insulin into the blood stream
