What is animal welfare?
An ethical concern for the mental and physical well-being of animals under our care.
What is a con of improving the welfare of farm animals?
It involves an expensive initial payment.
What are the be if it’s of free range farming?
Increased growth of animals Increased breeding success rate Higher quality end products Products can be sold for higher prices Less chance of disease Contented, less stressed animals.
What are the 4 behaviour patterns that indicate poor animal welfare?
Stereotypic behaviour
Misdirected behaviour
Failure in sexual and parental behaviour
Altered levels of activity.
What is stereotypy?
Stereotypies are repetitive, persistent behaviour without an obvious function.
What is stereotypy caused by?
Frustrated movement and stress (not boredom)
What is misdirected behaviour?
These behaviours appear when the animal is unable to properly express a short-term motivation and so directs its behaviour to an inappropriate object.
What behaviours may animals with altered levels of activity show?
High level of activity e.g. hyper-aggression (hysteria)
Low level of activity e.g. excessive sleeping (apathy)
What can poor treatment of animals lead to them being unable to do?
Reproduce.
Even if the animals do reproduce what is still a possible outcome due to their bad treatment?
They may reject their offspring.
How can farmers prevent the animals rejecting their offspring?
Give the mother and her baby contact early on in a spacious area.
