Key area 3- Photosynthesis Flashcards
What are the two stages of photosynthesis called?
Light reactions and Carbon fixation
Function of chlorophyll
A chemical found in the chloroplasts that is able to trap light energy
Where is chlorophyll found?
Chloroplast
What is ATP?
A form of chemical energy
What is the first stage of photosynthesis called?
Light reactions
What is the second stage of photosynthesis called?
Carbon fixation
What is cellulose?
Sugar that has been converted into cellulose that can be used for structural uses (e.g. structure of a cell wall)
What is a limiting factor?
A factor or substance that prevents a chemical reaction from happening quicker
What is sugar converted into for storage?
Starch
Describe what happens in the stage light reactions
Light energy is trapped in the chloroplasts, some light energy is converted into ATP, remaining light energy is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, oxygen then diffuses from the cell
Describe what happens in the stage carbon fixation
ATP and hydrogen from light reactions and carbon dioxide from the air combine, converted into sugar during a series of enzyme controlled reactions
What are the 3 uses of sugar made by photosynthesis?
Respiration, Storage as starch, Structural as cellulose
What are the 3 limiting factors that affect photosynthesis?
Temperature, Light intensity, Carbon dioxide CONCENTRATION
