Key Area 2.2a Nervous System Flashcards
What does the nervous system include?
Brain, spinal cord and nerves
What does the Central Nervous System (CNS) include?
Brain and spinal cord
How does the CNS control the body?
By receiving information from sense organs and then responding to that information
What carries information from the CNS?
Nerve cells (neurons)
What is the function of the cerebrum?
Largest part of the brain which splits into 2 cerebral hemispheres.
Both halves of the cerebrum are involved in CONSCIOUS THOUGHT
What is the function of the medulla?
Controls most of the basic bodily functions that we need to stay alive.
If your medulla stops working, you are considered clinically brain dead.
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Controls SUBCONSCIOUS ACTIVITIES associated with the fine motor control of muscles (co-ordination) and balance.
Where are receptors located?
In the sense organs
What to receptors detect?
Detect sensory input (also known as stimuli)
Give examples of stimuli that the receptors detect
Sound, light, taste, touch etc
Name the 3 different types of neurons
Sensory, inter and motor
Describe the function of the sensory neuron
Pass the information from a sense organ to the CNS
Describe the function of the inter neuron
Operate within CNS, which processes information from the senses that require a response
Describe the function of the motor neuron
Enable a response to occur at an effector
What do electrical impulses do?
Carry messages along neurons
