Key Area 1 Flashcards
List three examples of biomes
Forests, deserts, grasslands, tundra, aquatic
What is a biome?
A geographical region of a planet that contains distinctive flora and fauna with a distinctive climate
Which abiotic factors affect the distribution of biomes
Temperature and rainfall
What is meant by flora
Characteristic types of plant in a biome
What is meant by fauna?
Characteristic animals in a biome
What is meant by “ecosystem”?
All the organisms living in a particular habitat (the living and the non-living things)
What is meant by “population”?
Total number of organisms of ONE species in an ecosystem
What is meant by “community”?
All the living things in an ecosystem
What is meant by “habitat”?
The place were the organisms live
What is an abiotic factor?
Non-living components of an ecosystem that can affect the distribution of an organism e.g. Temperature, rainfall, pH, light intensity
What is meant by “niche”?
The role an organism plays with in a community
What is a “biotic factor”?
Living factors which affect the distribution of organisms
Give examples of biotic factors
Predation, competition, grazing and disease.
Give examples of ways in which humans over exploit the environment
Over-hunting, over-fishing, over-grazing
Give examples of habitat destruction
Desertification, deforestation
