Kepler's Laws Flashcards
Three laws that describe the orbital motion of satellites and planets.
Kepler’s Laws
The Law of Ellipses
The planets will orbit the Sun in elliptically-shaped orbits
First Law
The Law of Equal Areas
This law describes the speeds at which the planets orbit the Sun.
They subtend equal areas in equal amounts of time.
Second Law
The Law of Harmonies
This Law relates orbital period to orbital radius.
Third Law
Conservation of Energy and Kepler’s Laws:
is at a maximum when at the closest point of an orbit and minimum at he farthest point of an orbit.
is at a maximum when at the farthest point of an orbit and minimum at the closest point of an orbit.
THE TOTAL ENERGY OF AN ORBIT REMAINS CONSTANT
Conservation of Energy and Kepler’s Laws:
Kinetic energy
Potential energy
