What are the big 5 and how much do they contribute to the Kenya’s tourism?
The big 5 are the elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino. Overall wildlife makes up 80% of Kenya’s tourism
What human attractions are there in Kenya? (5)
Land and balloon safaris, Treks up mountains with a full staff, Visiting the local tribes to see their culture, Glass-bottomed boat trips, Colourful bazaars e.g Mombasa
What are the reasons for the growth of Kenya’s tourism? (4)
The government created 45 national parks and game reserves very early which attracted travel companies there,
Regular charter flights since 1960,
The government promoting tourism,
Stable country compared to its neighbours e.g Somalia
What are dangers to Kenya’s tourism industry? (3)
Conflict with Somalia to the north,
Terrorist attacks and bombings e.g Al-Shabaab, Westgate shopping centre in 2013,
Civil unrest due to corruption and inequality.
What are the benefits tourism brings to Kenya? (4)
A huge boost to the economy - 15% of the national GDP in 2007,
Provides many jobs - 250,000 in direct employment,
Multiplier effect for the other sectors,
More wildlife surviving as a result of the game parks which may have been used for poaching or grazing land.
What are the economic problems due to tourism facing Kenya?
The number of tourists fluctuates meaning the economy is harmed by any drop in tourists. In 2007, tribal violence due to a disputed election caused many people to cancel trips to Kenya. It took 2 years to recover the same amount to tourists as before.
What are the environmental problems with tourism facing Kenya? (3)
Coral reefs damaged by boats dropping anchor and tourists breaking bits off as souvenirs,
Animals disturbed by safari drivers getting to close to the wildlife for extra tips,
Soil erosion causing huge dust clouds because of the 4x4’s driving along the tracks frequently.
What evidence is there for damage done by the safari tours in Kenya?
The numbers of wildebeest as has declined from 800,000 to 300,000 in the past 20 years.
What are the social problems with tourism facing Kenya? (2)
Conflict between the Masai tribes and the Kenyan authorities,
Tourists not welcomed by the locals.
Why is there conflict between the Masai and the authorities in Kenya? (3)
The Masai were forced off their land to make game parks,
The Masai are injured and killed by wild animals but are prohibited from killing them,
They receive very little profit from the safari parks while the government take all the profits from the entrance fees.
What strategies have been put in place to improve tourism activity in Kenya? (3)
New tourist activities such as canoeing is being developed to diversify the tourism there,
Distributing the tourism more so the money received isn’t focused in one area,
Doubling entrance fees to safari parks and setting a minimum price for accommodation.
