What was the aim?
to compare the hassles and uplifts scale to the SRRS life events scale as predictors of psychological stress symptoms.
What’s the method?
a repeated measures design- each pp filled in hassles and life events scale
pp’s then assessed on their psychological symptoms of stress using the Hopkins sypmtoms checklist and the Bradburn morale scale
what is the sample used?
100 people - who had previously completed a health survey in 1985
216 initially contacted- 109 selected- 9 dropped out
all from california - mostly white protestant with adequate

- tests sent out by post
- pps complete- hassles rating for 9 months
- life events rating after 10 months
What were the results?
men and women
- hassles were consistent from month to month
- life events for mmen correlated positively with hassles and negatively for uplifts
- women= more life events they reported the more hassles and uplifts reported.
- hasslesfrequency correlated positively with physiological symptoms on HSCL
- Hass;es cprre;ated positively more with pysiological symptoms than life events did.
What conclusions were drawn up?
Hassles are a more powerful prediction of psychological symptoms than life events
hassles contribute to psychologival symptoms whatever life events happened
