Budzynski(1970): Behavioual Treatment To Improve Stress Flashcards
What’s the method?
Experimental
Patients trained in a lab
How many pps?
18
How were pps gathered?
Replied to a ad in a local paper
Where were the pps from?
Colorado
What’s the design?
Independent design
Pps randomly allocated to 3 groups
What’s the procedure ?
- 2 weeks - pps kept a record of their headaches
- grounds a and b given 16 sessions of training - 2 sessions a week for 8 weeks
- group a taught relaxation and told clicks of biofeedback machine would reflect their muscle tension
- group b told to concentrate on varying clicks and given pseudo feedback
- group c given no training, told would begin training in 2 months
What were group a told?
group a taught relaxation and told clicks of biofeedback machine would reflect their muscle tension
What were group b told
-group b told to concentrate on varying clicks and given pseudo feedback
What were the results?
Muscle tension of group a significantly different from group b by the end of the training
After 3 months - group as tension lowere than group b
Group a lover headaches than baseline - others didn’t
Drug usage in group a decreased more in b
A reported less headache activity than group b
What was concluded ?
Biofeedback is an effective way of training patients to replax and reduce their tension headaches so can be seen as an effective method of stress management
Relaxation training more effective than just being monitored , but is better when used together with biofeedback
What’s the aim?
To see whether biofeedback is an effective method of reducing tension headaches
