Kennedy classification Flashcards
what is kennedy class 1
bilateral edentualous areas located posterior to remaining teeth
what is kennedy class 2
a uniliateral edentulous area located posterior to the remaining natural teeth
what is a kennedy class III
a unilateral edentulous area with natural teeth remaining both anterior and posterior to it
what is a kennedy class 4
a single, but bilateral edentulous area located anterior to the remaining natural teeth
what are the 3 types of craddock classification
type 1: mucosa borne
type 2: tooth borne
type 3: mucosa and tooth borne
what are the requirements of a classification system
- allows visualization of the type of arch
- permits differentiation between types of support
- serves as a guide for design
- universally accepted
what is a modification space
edentulous areas other than those determining the classification
applegates rule #1
classification should follow extractions of teeth
applegates rule #2
if a third molar is missing and not to be replaced it is not considered in the classification
applegates rule #3
if a third molar is present and is to be used as an abutment it is considered in the classification
appleages rule #4
if a second molar is missing and is not to be replaced it is not considred in the classification
- generally if first molar is present and second and third molars are missing they are not replaced
applegates rule #5
the most posterior edentulous area always detemines the classifiction
applegates rule 6
edentulous areas other than those determining classification are referred to as modifications and are designated by their number
applegates rul 7
the extent of the modificatio is not considerd only the number
applegates rul 8
there can be no modification areas in class IV arches. other edentulous areas lying posterior to the single bilateral areacrossing the midline would instead determine the classification
