What is a healthy diet?
A healthy diet has the right balance of food types such as carbohydrate, protein and fats to keep the body healthy
How much energy does a person need each day?
This is difficult to say as people are different and have different METABOLIC RATES.
Also the energy requirements vary depending on lifestyle (athletes and manual workers will need a higher amunt of energy than someone who is inactive and works in the office).
Finally, age and sex can impact upon energy requirements and an elderly person will need less energy than a teenager.
What is the word used to describe someone who does not get sufficient vitamins and mineral ions due to an unbalanced diet?
Malnourished.
What is the recommended AVERAGE calories for men and women each day?
2500 for men and 2000 for women
Why do men, on average, require more calories than women?
As a general rule men are heavier and carry a larger amount of muscle and this lean tissue requires energy in the form of calories to be maintained.
What happens if you consume more energy than you need?
Your body will gain mass.
What happens if you consume less energy than you need?
Your body will lose mass.
How does exercise impact upon your energy needs?
Exercise increases the metabolic rate which means the chemical reactions in cells work faster.
What can effect metabloic rate other than exercise?
The proportion of muscel to fact and your INHERITED FACTORS can affect your metabolic rate
What doe you call people who are very fat and what health issues can this cause?
They are called obese and they are at risk of many severe health problems including Type 2 diabetes
Why do starving people find it difficult to walk?
Their body doe snot have sufficient energy and the lack of vitamins and minerals impact upon bodiy functions.
