Q

Outside of academics what have you done?

A

I do team sports such as dance with friends. It is a great way to destress and I particularly enjoy the competitions and shows that we are involved in.

I also love playing the piano, I teach it to students in my area and I am very passionate about it. I love when they are able to play a piece of music and the effort I go into to teach them and send them to competitions so they can perform to communities aswell. I find that playing and teaching piano enables me to clear my head, which helps me to be more focused.

Volunteering at the hospital - weekly basis, I get exposed to new people new fields, helping the staff and the patients. Making it easier for patients to come to at the hospital

Charity event - Burma - military coup

Q

A 14 year old girl comes in with a mum for pubic blockers (transgender) the mother supports the decision, should the doctor give it.

A

I would ask them for the idea, concern , expectation of the appointment. And I understand the mother supports it but I would ask the mother to step outside for a Moment in a caring way that doest cause any conflict.

I would ask her the reasons why she wants to go through treatment.
As she is a minor under the age of 16. We have to check her capacity, and check if she is competent enough (Gillicks competence) to consent to their own medical treatment. She must be able to weigh up, relay and retain the information given.

As it is regarding sexual health (Frasers Guidelines) - advice can be given if the child is mature enough and understands the treatment plan

There has been a case earlier last year, Travistock and Portman NHS foundation trust, which runs Englands only gender identity development service for children said that anyone under the age of 16 are unlikely to be mature enough to give informed consent, and some later on de transition - causing further health impacts.

So it is up to the doctors decision to really assess the competence especially in major treatments like this.

Q

From a list of pick 2 that is most important qualities for a doctor.

A

Doctors should learn from their mistakes because they should be providing the best quality of care and should learn from their mistakes to ensure it doesn’t happen again. The mistakes learnt can also be shared with other team members so they are wary of it and prevent the mistake from happening in the first place - providing best care. There is an National reporting and learning system which receives two million reports of incidents each year - learning from mistakes and finding new way to find the root cause and develop healthcare systems.

Doctors should work towards equity - as one of the medical pillars is justice where everyone is provided fair treatment. So ensuring the quality of the healthcare and treatment is the same across everyone. It is one of the hardest pillars - because say if a clinic is busy and overbooked you have to weigh up seeing a patient quickly (suboptimal job) and doing a proper job and having to make others wait/cancel.
So it is important that all doctors work towards fairness as much as possible. for the best delievery

Q

Has there been any challenging situation that you have been in, in your life?

A

Doing extended project qualification, about whether vaping should be a better alternative to smoking tobacco.

Problem:
I had to balance with my ALevels
I had to create a survey and ask people in my community there thoughts - and as covid restrictions were still in place people were scared to talk. So was hard to find results
Calling up companies - people were off or isolating, so meetings kept gettingg rearranged
Time pressure

Actions:
I tried contacting different companies, I used secondary research, I used the people around me for primary research - even tho it may not have been representative of a large population
I was serious about my end goal of receiving a high foal and I didnt give up

Result:
In the end I was able to finish my EPQ and obtain high marks
Learnt that planning is important but the ability to adapt is even more important
Not giving up or losing hope, and thinking outside the box to find a solution

Q

What would you do to the people who are struggling to pay bills?

A

Advise them that you can get help from the local council: they have schemes such as welfare assistance and household support fund. This helps pay for things such as energy water bills, food and essential items.

Set up a local community where we come together to hand out food, sanitation products when its hard to pay bills and provide food. Maybe once/twice a week. Charity Soup Kitchen hand out meals, clothing toiletries every day.

In terms of a government - subsidises £400 during the winter months. Schemes - Eat out help out known to help with businesses being open again so schemes, electric car grants government were involved in - so solar panels and insulation grants so cost reduction in electricity usage. - renewables.

Posters and more awareness - to try and save electricity - beware.
Smart meters to track amount used.

Tariffs aswell -using it

What should you do?

A
  • First ensure your in a safe, private area
  • Then I would listen. Say sorry for your loss.
  • Validate their emotions, understand what they have gone through.
  • Give them the opportunity to talk, and express what they are feeling
  • Reassure her that there are so many people that have gone through similar stories, and they have seen the light at the end of the tunnel - you will get better, you will be stronger.
  • Direct her to some support groups and therapist she could talk to.
  • If charity event –> tell her about it and ask her to come along
