Wrote 6 great odes in summer and autumn of 1819
All poems in anthology are great odes
Lyrical effect of odes in combination
Some believed them to form a thematic whole if arranged in sequence, representing new type lyrical poem, developing psychological thinking
A nightingale
The small bird had long symbol associated poetic and artistic inspiration
Negative capability
Concept set out by Keats to explain how mind cannot comprehend too vast.
Set aside truth to experience the subjective feeling of mystery
e.g. you will never know but that’s ok
Charles Brown
Keats housemate Charles brown recalled a day where a nightingale built a next near house and Keats sat under plum tree several hours composing and listening song
Keats parents & brother
Father & mother died before 15 (TB)
Brother died of TB, Keats try to save. Other brother moved US
Why did Keats suffer anxiety
Worked in medicine and was surrounded by death and suffering
E.g. had to hold patient down during suffering
Keats illness
Died 1821 from TB and suffered from years he wrote most his poetry
He spent it in isolation contemplating death in odes especially
