Causes and characteristics
-Formed by interaction between tropical wave and remnants of a tropical depression
-Category 5
-Top speed of 282km/hr
-250mm in a 24hr period
-8.5metre storm surge
Primary Effects
-1840 deaths
-108 billion in damages
Secondary effects
-Road networks damaged slowing aid
-lucky infrastructure was good preventing long term deaths
-500,000 homeless/displaced
Short term response
-search and rescue , over 55% that were stranded rescued by coast guard
-100,000 temporary homes put in place
-1.8 billion given by red cross alone
Long term response
-FEMA aimed for 700,000 to be rehomed however fell well short and there was argument it was due to racism as most displaced were black
