eden basin Flashcards
Where
North west England between lake district and pennines and flows towards carlisle
Why is it particularly vulnerable to floods
-Upland areas that drain into the river experience extreme weather
-Low lying and at confluence of 2 rivers , meeting point
-higher rainfall than national average
-long and narrow river increasing lag time
-topography is steep , reducing lag time and increasing peak discharge
-higher rock type is impermeable decreasing lag time and increasing runoff , low infiltration
Human impact
-more intensive farming causes soil to be compacted so less infiltration more runoff
-grazing reduces vegetation uptake of water so more runoff and more soil erosion
-construction increased mostly impermeable which increases runoff
-some new properties built on floodplains which poses a flood risk to properties
-deforestation also decrease infiltration and increase runoff
-climate change may increase rainfall in winter
Desmond
5th to 6th of December 2015
impacts
-1 kill
-upwards of 6000 homes destroyed
-1000s of trees uprooted
-total cost of repair was 500 million
Strategies to reduce the risk of extreme weather in the UK
-planting more vegetation to store water+increase infiltration
-predicting storms
-dredging rivers
