Kash (5 questions on test) Flashcards
Exogenous pathway
transports DIETARY lipids to the periphery and liver
Endogenous Pathway
transports HEPATIC lipids to the periphery
Largest lipoprotein
Chylomicron.
Highest Cholesterol
LDL (60%)
Hyperlipidemia
major cardiovascular risk factor that affects 25% of population. Cuases vessel damage due to oxidized LDL to form foam cells and lesions.
Proatherogenic risk factors for developing CV
high LDL
High Total Cholesterol
high Cholesterol / HDL
Low HDL (can’t be too low)
Statins
treat hyperlipidemia. NOT EFFECTIVE if LDL recepetor is dysfunctional. Inhibits HMG-CoA reductase (the RLS) that catalyzes Cholesterol synthesis. Liver has to get extra cholesterol from the blood instead.
Can cause HEPATOTOXICITY and MYOPATHY.
