Q

Karen Horney’s main contribution:

A

Three Basic Neurotic Trends

These are unconscious

These help temporarily reduce pain and increase feelings of safety, but are problematic when rigid and used indiscriminately

Q

Compliant types

A

Move toward people

The want to be liked, wanted, loved, appreciated, protected, and guided so they give in to others, and devalue their own talents and abilities

-neurotic need for affection
They are overly sensitive to criticism and will give in just to get approval

-neurotic need for partner who will take over ones life
These people are excessively dependent because they think they can’t take care of themselves
They are not careful who they choose as a partner and are incapable of the mutualities of a mature relationship
Unsatisfying relationships result
In abnormal psychology we say these people have a dependent personality disorder

-neurotic need to restrict ones life within narrow borders
These people are not risk takers
They don’t assert themselves for fear of others disapproval
They fear public humiliation, don’t like spontaneity, need orderliness, rules, and routine.
They feel safe through submitting to the will of others

Aggressive types

A

They want to look tough, and do not show feelings. They tend to be workaholics to gain prestige and wealth

-neurotic need for power
They seek power as a protection against helplessness, not hey avoid showing weakness or submitting to others
They believe in their own superiority and want to control others
They must always be right even in trivial matters
They will not show emotion so relationships are impaired
In abnormal psychology we say they have a compulsive personality disorder

-Neurotic need to exploit others
Exploit others to feel safe and on top of things
Expect good things for themselves and blame others when things go wrong
Don’t trust others and are waiting to be exploited
In abnormal psychology we call this paranoid personality disorder

-neurotic need for social recognition and prestige
Want popularity and recognition for achievement
See others as a means of getting this
Primary fear is loss of status

-neurotic need for personal admiration
They create an idealized image of themselves and want to be admired for that image

-neurotic ambition for personal achievement
They have indiscriminate ambition in too many areas so are doomed to being disappointed in themselves
They put others down to feel like they are the best

Q

Of her three characteristics, Karen Horney would say that…..

A

We all have characteristics from each of these types, but have a healthy balance by giving in when it’s appropriate, fighting when it’s appropriate, and pulling away when it’s appropriate

Problem occur when these behaviors are used regularly as a way of life
