kalimantan occupies 2/3 of the island of borneo, it is a part of indonesia. The size of its forest decreased by half from 1900 to 2000
causes of deforestation in kalimantan
oil palm industries: cheap to grow /high profits / in kalimantan the area used by palm plantation grew to nearly a million ha in 2003
timber logging
- to support the demands for mordern products
- increasing consumer demand wuth incraesing affluence (illegal logging)

- kalimantan is very rich in minign ores (e.g gold/sliver/ copper)
-mordern methods of mining destroy huge areas of forests-> cyanide
TRANSMIGRATION POLICY
- resettling the overcrowed JAVA to less crowed islands (kalimantan)
- rural urban migration to cities to look for jobs and better opportunites in life
- forests cleared as cities expand
TRANS-KALIMANTAN HIGHWAY
-230 km long
- cuts through the forest to link to balikpapan and banjarmansin
- improved accesibilty allows people to enter the forest for other purposes (mining/ logging/ more forest cover destroyed)
- building roads require logginf itself, this requires even more logging due to increased accessibilty
