1
Q
what is deforestation?
A
deforestation is the permanent removal of natural vegetation in an area/ purposeful clearing of forests
2
Q
why are forest important?
A
- manages the quantity and quality of the water supply
- replenishes atmospheric oxygen and removes carbon dioxide
- maintan nutirents in the soil
- habitat for flora and fauna
- habitat for people(indigenous ppl)
- provides a source of useful materials
- recreational purposes
research and education for future uses
3
Q
Causes of deforestation
A
- by the early 2000s more than 3/4 of the forest clearing in the amazon was for cattle-ranching
- agriculture
- logging
- transmigration: the mass movement of a human popuplation from one location to another
- urbanisation
- oil-palm production
- fire
- infrastructure
- trans-kalimantan highway ( links to various parts of the borneo island)
4
Q
Impacts of deforestation
A
- loss of biodiveristy
- loss of water catchment areas
- increased risk of flodding, soil erosion and sedemantation
- enhanced greenhouse effect
- depletion of natural resources
- loss of habitats for yhe indigenous people
5
Q
trend of deforestation
A
- Between 2015 to 2020, the rate of deforestation was estimated at 10 million hectares per yer, down from 16 million hectares per year in the 1990s
- the area of primary forest worldwide was decraesed over by 80 million hectares since 1990
- spatial pattern of deforesatation follows the linear pattern of tropical rainforests between the tropics where the deforested areas are mostly on the peripheries of the major areas of rainforest
6
Q
how does deforestation affect climate change
A
deforestation causes increases in temperatures and changes in the amount and distribution of rainfall, creating a drier climate.
7
Q
global distribtuion of deforestation
A
- general pattern e.g deforestation between tropic of cancer and capricorn
- region specific e.g major deforestation in corrando
- anomaly
