KA4 Flashcards
What 2 cells does the nervous system compose it
Neurones
Glial cells
What is the function of the sensory neurons
Transmit impulses from sense organs to the CNS
What is the function of the inter neurones
Receive impulse from sensory neurones and sends impulse to motor neurones
What is the function of the motor neurone
Transmit impulse from CNS to effector organs
What is features of dendrites
Thread like extensions that receive impulses and conduct these towards the cell body
What is the feature of the cell body
Contains the nucleons and other cell organelles
Contains many ribosomes
What is a myelin sheath
A covering of fatty materaials which surrounds the axon
Increases the conduction of nerve impulses
What are the features of the axon
A fibre that conducts impulses away from the cell body
Usually branch at the end and are covered in myelin sheath
When does myelination occur
Continues from birth to adolescence
Why are unmyelinated neurons slower at transmitting impulses
They do contain electrical insulated so the signal degrades as it passes along the neurons
What disease can damage the myelin sheath
Multiple sclerosis
What is multiple sclerosis
Life long condition that affects the brain and nerves
Occurs due to your immune system attacking the brain and nerves accidentally
Common symptoms include tiredness, vision problems or problems with walking or balance
What role do glial cells have
Provide physical support
Produce myelin sheath
What is summinatjin
When lots of signals come together and can release enough neurotransmitters to trigger an impulse
