KA1- Gamate Production and Fertilisation Flashcards
How is sperm formed?
It is formed from germline cells.
Where is sperm produced?
In the testes, at the seminiferous tubules.
Where is the hormone testosterone produced?
In the testes by the interstitial cells found in between the seminiferous tubules.
What is the function of testosterone?
Testosterone activates the prostate gland and seminal vesicles to secrete fluids.
What is the function of the fluids release by the seminal vesicles?
To maintain the mobility and viability of sperm.
What is the job of sperm duct?
Transport sperm from testes to the urethra.
What is the function of urethra?
Releases sperm and urine.
What is the function of cervix?
Muscular ring between vagina and uterus. Secretes cervical mucus, important in fertility.
What is the uterus?
Where the foetus develops during pregnancy.
What is the endometrium?
Wall of the uterus, where the embryo implants.
What happens in the oviduct?
Site of fertilisation.
What is produced in the ovaries?
Ova (egg).
From what is ova produced?
From germline cells.
What is each ovum surrounded by?
A follicle.
What is a follicle?
A small, fluid filled sac in an ovary that contains one immature ovum.
What is the role of the follicle?
To protect the developing ovum and secrete hormones.
What happens when an ova is mature?
It goes through ovulation- release of an egg.
What happens to the follicle?
Follicle develops into a corpus luteum, which secretes the hormone progesterone.
What happens to the mature ova, after ovulation?
It is released into the oviduct, where they may be fertilised by a sperm to form a zygote.
What is fertilisation?
Fertilisation is when the nucleus of a sperm fuses with the nucleus of an ovum.
