JVD 2011 #4 - Comparison of Shear Bonding Strength for Two Different Etching Systems in Canine and Human Dentin Flashcards

1
Q

According to Larry Kimberlin, DVM; Phil Brown, DDS in

Comparison of Shear Bonding Strength for Two Different Etching Systems in Canine and Human Dentin,

What was performed in this study?

A

Bonded to canine and human dentin with 2 different bonding agents, one self etch system and one etch and rinse system.

then used a jig to put a composite disk on top of the bonding agent and light cured it.

used a shear bond strength testing device to calculate the bonding strength

Q

According to Larry Kimberlin, DVM; Phil Brown, DDS in

Comparison of Shear Bonding Strength for Two Different Etching Systems in Canine and Human Dentin,

What was found comparing bond strength with the self etch and the etch and rinse system of dog dentin versus human dentin?

A

Strength of bond is higher in human dentin. bond strength

44% higher for etch and rinse, and 39% higher for self etch

According to Larry Kimberlin, DVM; Phil Brown, DDS in

Comparison of Shear Bonding Strength for Two Different Etching Systems in Canine and Human Dentin,

Was a significant difference found between the two bonding systems used in dog dentin?

A

No, The self etch was a little better, but NSD

Q

According to Larry Kimberlin, DVM; Phil Brown, DDS in

Comparison of Shear Bonding Strength for Two Different Etching Systems in Canine and Human Dentin,

What one big difference between canine and human dentin that may account for the results seen?

A

Dogs have latger dentinal tubules and therefor have less intertubular dentin.

So less dentin to bond to leaves a weaker bond.

Wth dentin bonding what is considered to be the primary mechanism for bonding?

A

attachment of resin to the intertubular collagen matrix is reported to be the primary factor responsible for this bond

Q

According to Larry Kimberlin, DVM; Phil Brown, DDS in

Comparison of Shear Bonding Strength for Two Different Etching Systems in Canine and Human Dentin,

What is the difference between adhesive failure, cohesive failure and mixed failure?

A

adhesive failure is shearing at the bond/tooth interface

Cohesive failure is shearing within the material (or complete failure in tthe dentin)

Mixed failure is a little of both

Q

According to Larry Kimberlin, DVM; Phil Brown, DDS in

Comparison of Shear Bonding Strength for Two Different Etching Systems in Canine and Human Dentin,

Given the findings of a lower shear bonding strength to dog dentin than human dentin, what clinical implication might there be?

A

may have greater risk of losing restoration in vet med because does not stick as hard
