What does the Childeren and Young Persons’ law of various states empower
It empowers the Chief Judge of a State to constitute a juvenile court for the purpose of hearing and determining cases relating to children and young persons.
What is a juvenile constituted of
It is generally constituted by a magistrate sitting with such other persons, if any, as the chief judge shall appoint.
What is the jurisdiction like in family court
It is vested with criminal jurisdiction to try young persons and children except where the charge is one of homicide and when the juvenile is charged together with adults.
How is the sitting of a family court carried out
The sitting shall be held either in a different building or room from that in which courts splitting are held. By Section 6 (5) of the Children and Young Person law of Lagos State, the proceedings of the court shall be held in camera.
Who is a juvenile
A juvenile may be a child or a young person. A child is a person under the age of 14 years, while a young person is one who is between 14 and 17 years of age.
