A

He was attacked in Darlington town centre by a youth. He was taken to hospital and fell into a coma, dying over a year after the attack.

What was the legislation that allowed Michaels attacker to be set free?

A

The year and a day rule. If a victim lived for 366 days after an attack, the offender could not be charged with murder or manslaughter, only GBH or assault.
The offender was let out of prison before Michael’s death.
