Collective unconscious
Largest part of unconscious mind and embodies human nature. It is shared by every human being.
Archetypes
Dozens of basic instincts that shape how we behave. Don’t have content, but are more like cookie cutters. Ways of thinking that are projected onto our lives
Personal Unconscious
Empty part of our unconscious that stores memories we experience throughout life.
How do memories enter personal unconscious
Memories enter personal unconscious because they are either not important enough to reach consciousness, are forgotten until a stimulus brings them to consciousness, or are repressed
Complexes
A collection of thoughts or emotions specific to a particular theme or idea (usually archetypal)
The Persona
Archetype: Instinct for social conformity, desire to please others
Complex: The personality shown to others
i.e. the clothes we wear, house we own, etc.
The Anima
Archetype: A males image of “femaleness”
Complex: All aspects of a males personality considered contrasexual/not male and therefore represses
The Animus
Archetype: A females image of “manliness”
Complex: All aspects of a female’s personality she considers male, and therefore represses
The Shadow
Archetype: Our primal instincts
Complex: Every aspect of our personality we consider “not us” and reject it
The Self
Archetype: The instinct to reach unity/wholeness
Complex: The integration of all aspects/complexes of personality
