Jung Flashcards
What was Jung famous for?
Analytical psychology
How did Jung view personality?
The psyche as a non-physical space that has its own reality
What is the Psyche?
Jung thought of the psyche as the total personality
Conscious and unconscious processes
Principle of opposites creates psychic energy
What is the difference between the psyche and the unconscious?
The psyche is an expanded version of the unconscious.
It is not limited to individual’s unique life experiences, but filled with fundamental psychological truths shared by a whole human race.
What is the psyche comprised of?
The self (ego)
The personal unconscious
The collective unconscious
What is the collective unconscious?
The collective unconscious is a part of the psyche that contains memories and impulses that people are unaware of via primordial images.
What are primordial images?
figures or ideas thought to be a fundamental part of human nature
passed down from our ancestors
foundation for how people behave
also known as archetypes
What is the collective unconscious made of?
archetypes
What are archetypes?
Primitive symbolic representation
ancient symbols
Give examples of archetypes
The mother
the father
the wise old man
the sun
the mood
the hero
God
death
The persona
The Shadow
Anima and Animus
The Self
How is the collective unconscious inherited?
passed down through generations of humans and is part of the inherited structure of the brain
What is the persona archetype?
The mask we adopt to help us deal with other people
Changes across situations
Allows us to adapt to societal demands
Disguises inner feelings to allow appropriate social responses
May result in stereotypical behaviour when used to extremes
What is the Shadow archetype?
The unconscious side of ourselves that is negative
Partly in personal unconscious, partly in collective unconscious
We see our own character flaws in other people
Well-adjusted people incorporate good and evil parts into wholeness of self
What is the anima?
feminine side of the male
What is the animus?
masculine side of the female
Describe the anima and animus?
we unconsciously hold an image of the man or woman we are looking for
So we project our anima/animus onto potential mates to fit a good fit,
when looking for a romantic partner
What is the self archetype?
MOST SIGNIFICANT OF ARCHETYPES
potential to achieve unique identity
via process of individuation
create balance within the psyche and accept oneself
origin of our need for self-actualisation
part of collective unconscious but one individuated and have unique identity, becomes part of personal unconscious
How many personality types did Jung come up with?
8
What are the 8 personality types?
Extraverted thinking
Extraverted feeling
Extraverted sensing
Extraverted intuition
Introverted thinking
Introverted feeling
Introverted sensing
Introverted intuition
What are the two basic attitudes of personality?
Extraverion
Introversion
What are the 4 functions of personality
Thinking
Feeling
Sensing
Intuition
How did Jung come up with two different personality types?
Saw differences in how Freud and Adler viewed personality and individual differences.
Decided that if the same situation can be viewed differently then there must be two different personality types
Freud= Extraverted
Adler = Introverted
Describe the extraversion attitude
Psyche is oriented outward to the objective world
The extrovert tends to be more comfortable with the outer world of people and things
Describe the Introversion attitude
Psyche is oriented inward to the subjective world
Introvert more comfortable with inner world and of concepts and ideas
How do the four functions pair up?
Thinking vs Feelings
Sensation vs Intuition
Describe thinking vs feeling functions
Rational opposites (how we come to make judgements)
Thinking - use logic and impersonal analysis
Feeling - more concerned with personal values, attitudes and beliefs
Describe sensation vs intuition functions
Irrational opposites (how we perceive data and gather info)
Sensor - more comfortable using 5 senses and dealing with facts
Intuitor - Looks for relationship or possibilities about past or future events
Describe Extraverted thinking people

try to be objective but may be dogmatic in thinking
repress feelings
describe introverted thinking people
strong need for privacy
theoretical, intellectual & somewhat impractical
may have trouble getting along with others
repress feelings
describe extroverted feeling people

repress thinking
describe extraverted sensing people

strongly oriented toward reality
repress intuition
describe introverted sensing people
passive, calm and artistic
objective sensory events
repress intuition
describe extroverted intuitive people
very creative
find news Ideas appealing
tend to make decisions based on hunches
in touch with their unconscious wisdom
repress sensing
describe introverted intuitive people

develop unusual ideas
seldom understood
repress sensing

Strengths of Jung’s theories
Able to describe behaviour well
Address the evil within
Include cultural elements
concepts have been built upon since
Jungian therapy still used today
Weaknesses of jung’s theories
Based on introspection
Do not cover development of personality in detail
Concepts are not operationalised/testable
Not parsimonious
