Conscious, Personal unconscious and Collective unconscious.
Describe the “conscious” level of psyche
Psychic images sensed by the ego (awareness)
Describe the “personal unconscious” level of psyche
Psychic images not sensed by the ego
Content is made of COMPLEXES (EMOTIONAL TONED IDEAS)
Originate from individual experiences
Describe the “collective unconscious” level of psyche
Psychic image that are not inherited but rather predisposed due to repeated experiences of early ancestors.
Content is made of ARCHETYPES (Ancient images that are have a biological basis but derive from repeated ancestral experiences)
Describe the 6 main archetypes?
Persona - Side of personality we show the world
Anima (Men) - Repressed feminine side in hyper- masculine men.
Animus (Women) - Repressed masculine side in hyper-feminine women.
Shadow - Darkness and repression of qualities we don’t wish to acknowledge.
Great Mother - Representation of two opposing forces (Fertility and Destruction)
Wise Old Man - Representation of wisdom and meaning.
What are Attitudes? What are the two types of attitudes?
Attitudes are predisposition to act or reach in a characteristic direction.
Extroversion (Outward energy; objectively oriented)
Introversion (Inward energy; subjectively oriented)
What are the Four Functions? Differentiate between Rational and Irrational Functions.
Rational Functions (Thinking & Feeling) - Process Information in cause-effect & linear fashion.
Irrational Functions (Sensing & Intuiting) - Organizing experiences in a non-linear, complex fashion.
Describe the Four Functions
Thinking - Logical intellectual activity that produces a chain of ideas
Feeling - Process of evaluating an idea or event
Sensing - Receive physical stimulus and transmit to perceptual consciousness
Intuiting - Knowing and perceiving without knowing how
What is a Mandala?
Symbol representing the striving for unity and completion
Describe the stages of Childhood phase
Anarchic - Chaotic and sporadic consciousness
Monarchic - Development of ego by start of logical and verbal thinking
Dualistic - Ego is divided into objective and subjective.
Describe Youth Phase
Period of increased activity, growing consciousness and recognition childhood is gone.
Conservative principle - Desire to live in the past
Describe Midlife and Old Phase
Capability to give up extraverted foals of youth and move toward introverted direction of expanded conciousness
What is Individuation?
Process of becoming an individual or whole person.
Psychological rebirth starting at midlife and integration of opposite to achieve balance
Requires TURNING INWARD and CONFRONTATION OF ARCHETYPES
What are Projective Test? Describe the two most common ones.
Tests that project one’s unconscious
*Rorschach Inkblot - Description of inkblots associated with meanings and is scored on themes such as sexuality, food, detail or whole.
*Thematic Appreciation Test (TAT) - Use of scene drawing that are ambiguous and open to interpretation. Themes are a reflection of individuals unconscious thoughts and potential problems.
