What is Psychoanalystic Social Theory?
Horney’s Personality Theory built on the assumption that social and cultural conditions, especially in childhood, are responsible for shaping personality.
What is Basic Hostility?
REPRESSED FEELINGS OF RAGE that originate during childhood when children fear parent’s WILL NOT SATISFY their NEED for SAFETY and SATISFACTION
What is Basic Anxiety?
FEELINGS OF ISOLATION and HELPLESSNESS in a potentially hostile world
What are Horney’s 4 main criticisms of Freud?
(1) Too rigid toward new ideas, (2) Skewed view of feminine psychology, (3) Overemphasis on biology and pleasure principle, (4) Too pessimistic.
What is the importance of childhood?
Most adult neuroses stem from childhood experience and individuals often repeat patterns started in childhood.
What is the impact of culture?
Ambition v. Affection - Western society competes these two forces against each other leading to neurosis and isolation.
What are Neurotic Needs? Describe the main 4 neurotic needs.
Neurotic Needs - The ways individuals protect themselves against basic anxiety.
*Affection, Submissiveness, Power/Prestige and Withdrawal
What are Neurotic Trends? Name the 3 Neurotic Trends
Neurotic Trends are basic attitudes toward self and others; Includes MOVING AWAY, TOWARD OR AGAINST OTHERS.
Note: Each is a “solution” to the problem of basic anxiety.
Describe the neurotic trend of “Moving Towards” people
Compliance
Characteristics: Self-Effacing Solution (Individuals feel other’s condemn them), dependency, weakness, repression of hostility.
Morbid Dependency & Dependent Personality Disorder
Describe the neurotic trend of “Moving Against” People
Aggressive
Characteristics: Expansive solution (belief others should submit to them), need for mastery/power/ prestige, narcissistic and hostile.
Anti-social Personality Disorder
Describe the neurotic trend of “Moving Away” from People
Detached
Characterstics: Resignation solution (solve anxiety by detaching), appeal for freedom, self-sufficient, and need for privacy.

What are the Intrapsychic conflicts?
Idealized Self Image - Solves the problem for the need of developing a stable identity based on positive views on one’s self.
Self-Hatred - Neurotic individuals dislike themselves because reality always falls short of their idealized self-view.
What are the 3 aspects of the idealized self-image?
(1) Neurotic Search For Glory - Need for perfection, ambition and triumph.
(2) Neurotic Claims - Unrealistic demands and expectation entitled to special privilege (Narcissism)
(3) Neurotic Pride - False pride based on one’s idealized self-image
